In July 2020, Magento ended all support for their version 1 platform and strongly encouraged users to switch to their new Magento 2 platform. The upgraded version offers a wealth of benefits including meta tag functionality to improve your SEO, a user-friendly dashboard to make customization easier than ever before and an overall better online shopping experience.

However, like any new technology upgrade, there are issues and challenges with Magento 2. Considering that Magento 1 was released in 2008 and users were not required to migrate to the new version until over ten years later, we can’t be too surprised. If you recently made the upgrade, you have likely experienced at least of one the following Magento 2 issues:

  • Slow loading times
  • Re-indexing errors
  • Caching issues

These issues can be very frustrating and significantly impact your productivity – if your Magento 2 is running slow, you can’t make the necessary changes to your ecommerce site. Luckily, there are solutions to help you overcome these Magento 2 challenges and have your site loading faster.

Here are a few best practices and helpful tips to resolve Magento issues:

Get to the root of the problem: If your Magento 2 is running slow, check your server resources and system requirements. An e-commerce site holds a lot of data with all of your products and the corresponding pictures and details. If you do not have the necessary resources, you will likely find that Magento 2 is taking too long to respond.

One update isn’t enough, make sure you check for changes regularly: Bugs happen and functionality can always be improved, that’s why you should regularly check for updates to Magento 2. Developers are regularly creating new updates to ensure the common issues with Magento 2 are being resolved.

Enable Magento Varnish or Memcached to regularly clear site cache: If you are finding that you are making changes to the CSS, only to find the styles are not being applied to the front page, make sure you have a caching system set up. You can also clear cache manually by entering a command in your Magento 2 root directory.

Reduce load on the database with a flat catalog: A flat catalog can store all of your ecommerce product and category information in a shortened query in your database. By enabling it, you are able to improve performance and experience quicker load times.

Get rid of unnecessary files: Minimize the number of Javascript and CSS files on your Magento 2 store to improve site speed.

Compress image sizes: You likely have great, high-resolution pictures of your products which are perfect for large signage that you put out in your store. However, it is not necessary to use such large file sizes on your website and we highly recommend against it. Compress your image files to help overcome issues with Magento 2 running slow.

Online shopping continues to increase and your ecommerce website is a reflection of your brand. It can make or break a sale. Don’t let Magento 2 issues stand in the way of your business’s success.
