The hashtag has become the butt of a lot of jokes. Is there a right or wrong way to use it? That depends. If you are a business using the hashtag to gain new followers, or new business, then you should have a plan. If you’re an individual using the hashtag on your Tweets, Google+ posts or Instagram, then it’s pretty much a free for all.
While #hashtags can be personal and not everyone thinks to use them on every post (nor is it necessary), there are a few hashtags that I think are worth using every now and then on certain social media marketing platforms. The use of hashtags originated from Twitter, but has now transitioned over to Facebook, Google+, Instagram and although Pinterest got rid of it, there’s nothing wrong with adding hashtags to show up in more search results. (Think: Keywords) Here are 7 social media hashtags worth using:
1. #socialmedia
If you’re using social media, then you can actually use this hashtag for just about anything. It is also widely searched, so it’s a great one if you’ve run out of ideas.
2. #socialmediatips
If you’re a business using social media marketing, then you are probably always looking for tips. If you’re not, then you should be. Social media is a fast-paced, ever-changing industry that not many small businesses can keep up with. This is a great hashtag to search, and if you learn something new – share it with this hashtag!
3. #photooftheday
If you have a photo that is breathtaking, humorous or outrageous, it is worth adding this hashtag. This is the #6 most searched hashtag on Instagram. Posting photos using hashtags make the consumers find you quicker as they don’t have to read anything. Nobody likes to read anymore!
4. #tbt
This stands for Throwback Thursday and it originated on Instagram. This is an excellent way to break up the monotony of real-time life. Let’s take it back in time, whether we are a business or an individual. And, it’s extremely popular.
5. #sharkweek
Because, who doesn’t like Shark Week?
6. #ff
Though popularity of this Follow Friday hashtag has fallen off quite a bit, it is still a great tool to provide a shout out to your followers. It’s great Twitter etiquette to share a Twitter account that you enjoy reading with your followers. Oftentimes, in return, you will have a shout out back. Great exposure for the right accounts.
7. #freebiefriday
If you are a business and you want to promote something, this is an excellent way to do it. You can be giving away information, coupons, or prizes, but there are many people searching for the word FREE in any Tweet. Welcome to America.
