1) Less is More
If you haven’t noticed, your newsfeeds are flooded with posts and tweets. Unless your job is to sit and monitor an account daily, there’s no way you’re going to see every single post from every single account you follow. (that’s not a challenge, by the way) So, with all the influx of news, anything your business is going to post has to be GREAT quality and the “less is more” theory is cemented in the fact that users “prefer hyper-relevant, in-the-moment content to regurgitated updates or retrospective posts,” and therefore they want to see fewer posts.
2) Platform Dynamics Change
Facebook is NOT the only social media platform out there. Neither is Twitter. We’ve now diversified to Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Google+, Pinterest, Reddit, and others. And, not everyone is on every platform. So, as a marketer or business owner, it’s really important you know where your customers are and which platform(s) they are engaging on.
3) Live Streaming is on the Rise

Instead of just browsing through your social media sites, and stumbling upon advertising or posts about a product you may be interested in, bringing you to that product’s website, “buy buttons” are becoming more popular. In Facebook, you can actually set up a shop where users can purchase product directly in Facebook. Advertisements are becoming more like a shopping experience. It’s almost like turning marketing into shopping. You can thank the younger generations and their short attention span for this one.
5) It’s Getting Personal
When you’re following every single person you’ve met in your life, worked with, TV show you’ve watched, store you’ve shopped at, and every news channel you’ve ever heard of, then you’re probably going to get a lot of uninteresting information fed to you. We all have our own priorities, our own interests, and a limited time. So, instead of viewing every single item that gets posted, we want to see what we want to see. We want our newsfeeds to be personalized. Facebook, and now Instagram (a subsidiary of Facebook), offer the abilities to have personalized newsfeeds. In addition to their algorithms, which are intended to show you what you want to see, you can “turn off” or “hide” specific posts, specific topics, specific sources, or even whole accounts. The social media sites do not want to lose you as a user, so the demand for personalization is being heard.
