How to Use Google+ For Your Business
I’ve talked about Google+ many times and how important it is to your business, despite what you think. Yes, very few individuals use Google+ as a social networking platform, and only a handful more businesses actually use it as a social marketing platform. But, that doesn’t mean you should ignore it. Google+ is still owned by Google, and Google is still the #1 search engine out there. If you look at your website’s analytics (probably from Google Analytics), you will most likely notice that you are still getting a large portion of your traffic from organic search on Google. (Yes, there are a few of you out there who are not, I’m not talking to you – you’re doing something awesome somewhere else in the world.)
Now that you know you should be using Google+, how do you get started? I have had a few clients approach me because they either have multiple accounts, didn’t know they had an account, or have no idea how to set up a business page vs. their personal profile. No worries. Let’s take a look at how you can use your Google+ page for business:
1) If you have a Google Account, you have a personal Google+ account. Type in https://plus.google.com/ and see whether you can log in with your G-mail or Google account.
2) If you would like to set up a Business Page, click on the blue circle (or your photo within the blue circle) at the top right of the page. When you click on this, a drop-down will appear and you will see “All Your Google Pages” and after you click on this, it’ll show you a blue button that says “Create Page.” This is where you can create your business page!
3) When you create posts, make sure to tag other people and/or businesses (with a + before their name)! This helps increase your exposure and gets you noticed by others on Google+ (G+).
4) Post on G+ if you’re posting on other social media sites. If you’re seeing that something is gaining exposure and engagement on Twitter or Facebook, then cross post it to G+. You don’t have to, and are not encouraged to, cross-post everything.
5) If you have a lot to say and can’t fit it into a Tweet, then post it on G+ and post the link on Twitter. This way you can introduce your post on Twitter with a link to the full message on G+.
6) Use images and videos! It’s no secret that the generation using social media would rather see an image than read a long paragraph. The old adage “a picture is worth 1,000 words” holds true on social media.
7) Remind people you are using G+. Advertise it on your other social media sites. Put it in your e-mail newsletter or your blog. Make it easy for people to share your content onto their G+ accounts.
