You’re ready to build or redesign your website, but you want to do it right. In today’s digital world where content is king, your website is the first place your prospects or customers will go for information. Capturing their attention and keeping them engaged comes down to the quality of your site and the value you offer.

So, where do you go, who do you turn to and how do you do it? With so many competing content management systems out there, figuring out which one is best for you can be daunting. We’re here to make that process easier.

Which Is Better: Joomla, Drupal or WordPress?

WordPress is by far the most popular content management system out there today. Though it hasn’t been around as long as some of the other CMS platforms, it currently holds an impressive 60.4% market share1 and powers over 34.6% of all websites worldwide.2 But, it’s not the only website-building tool on the market. Today we’ll look at two other common platforms, Joomla and Drupal, and examine how they stack up against WordPress in a WordPress vs. Joomla vs. Drupal showdown.

Why WordPress is so Popular

WordPress is a free, open-source CMS known for its ease of use. The tool lets you build anything from a basic blog to a thriving e-commerce site, with only a slight learning curve. Even the most basic user can install, manage and maintain a site using WordPress. With 30K plugins and over 2000 themes, the platform is fully customizable and expandable to support a visually stunning site. Its intuitive interface and simple menus make it quick and easy to create new pages and publish content in minutes.

While its simplicity is a key selling feature, WordPress also has a number of under-the-hood features and functionality that the more tech-savvy can tap into for even greater customization. Additionally, the platform boasts a vast network of support resources, including an active user community and a large pool of skilled developers.

WordPress vs. Joomla

Powering over three million websites worldwide, Joomla is the second most widely used CMS on the market. With Joomla, users can create a range of site types, from simple personal pages to complex web applications. It also allows for the implementation of small customizations with little dependence on extensions. Joomla is great for more complex, multi-user and multi-lingual websites.

The drawback, however, is that it does require some basic technical knowledge, which could add additional cost to an otherwise free tool. While many of its templates allow users to change layouts, colors, fonts without any coding involved, the interface in general is not quite as intuitive and easy as WordPress. Additionally, finding developers who specialize in the platform might be harder than its more popular competitor.

In a matchup between the two, WordPress is the clear winner when it comes to user friendliness, support and cost. On the other hand, for businesses with access to IT support resources who want a more advanced, interactive website, Joomla comes out on top. In a Joomla vs. WordPress security showdown, they offer similar levels of protection, with WordPress coming out slightly ahead.

WordPress vs. Drupal

Of the three CMS solutions, Drupal is the most powerful, but by far the most complex—so much so that it’s nearly impossible for a basic user to understand. So why use Drupal instead of WordPress? For starters, the platform supports highly customized sites—those that require scalability and complex content organization. With its powerful metadata and taxonomy functionality, it can tag, categorize, and organize large volumes of content. Additionally, it can support thousands of pages and users, while offering lockdown security. Drupal is also known for producing the fastest loading websites, giving it the clear edge in the Drupal vs. WordPress speed category.

Notably, the majority Drupal’s themes are highly customized—some even custom-coded. This is not a do-it-yourself platform; you will need a skilled developer to develop and manage your Drupal site.

In short, is Drupal harder than WordPress? Yes. That’s an undisputed fact. Is Drupal better than WordPress? That all comes down to the type of site you want to create, and your willingness to enlist additional IT resources in the process.

WordPress vs. Joomla vs. Drupal: The Final Verdict

All three have the power to deliver a polished, professional website. From there, it all comes down to your specific needs and requirements. For a site that’s highly customized with limitless flexibility and scalability, go for Drupal—but be sure you’ve got a web developer lined up. For the tech-savvy who are looking to build and manage a complex site without the need for significant coding, consider Joomla. If you’re looking for a high-quality site that’s easy to build, navigate and manage, WordPress is your go-to.
